Knights of Columbus

The Ellinwood St. Joseph Council 1187 Knights of Columbus was first charted on January 13, 1907.  In the spring we have an awards breakfast to recognize those who have attained 25 and 50 years of membership and those who have attained honorary life membership.  In November we hold our annual memorial service to eulogize the members who have passed away in the past year.  In December we have our annual Christmas party.  On the last Sunday in January we have a soup sampler dinner.  The proceeds from this event go to our scholarship fund.  On the First Friday of Lent we have a catfish fry, the proceeds goes to requests for aid that we get during the year.  In October we have our annual pancake and sausage breakfast, this event is held in conjunction with the state wide tootsie roll campaign.  This helps fund the annual special olympics and several Barton County organizations helping people with intellectual disabilities.  In January we have our bottles program with the proceeds going to Barton County prolife organizations.  Through our emergency disaster aid program we help people who have suffered substantial loss because of a natural disaster.  Through the state run aid to Religious Education program the PSR programs of St. Joseph in Ellinwood and Holy Name in Bushton receive financial help.  If you are interested in becoming a member of the Knights of Columbus, please contact any Knights of Columbus member.

January is bottles for babies month-----Donations from this program will go to pro life organizations.   This is the same program that we had last year.  We will have K of C members at the back of the church after each Mass during January to hand out baby bottles.  The idea is for you to take the bottles  home, fill them with your change ( we will naturaly also accept bills and checks ) and return them to us. Because of your generosity last year we were able to donate $1000.00 to Birthright of Great Bend and $1000.00 to The Catholic Social Service in Great Bend.  We again want to thank you for those donations and we hope to be able to make sizable donations to those organizations again this year.

The Knights of Columbus will have their annual soup sampler on Sunday, January 31st at St. Joseph parish center.  Serving will be from 10:00 AM until 1:00PM.   Proceeds from this event go towards our scholarship fund.  The Ellinwood K of C has been giving scholarships now for twenty years, having given the first one in 1989.    If any Knight would be willing to make and donate a roaster full of soup ( you choose what kind you want to make ) for this event, please call Kirk Day at 564-2018.

There will be a Knights of Columbus first, second and third degree initiation on Sunday, January 10th  in Hoisington.  Any male member of the parish 18 years of age or older is eligible to join.  The first degree initiation will probably start at 11:00AM with the second and third at approximately 1:00PM.  If any one is interested in joining the Knights of Columbus, please call Jerome Huslig at 564-3318.

The Knights of Columbus annual fish fry will be coming up on February 19th.  More on this at a later date.
