Knights to 'Lift High the Cross' this Lent

“But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ” Galatians 6:14.
The cross is one of the most recognizable symbols of Christianity. It recalls Christ’s Passion and death for us. This year during Lent, the St. Joseph Knights of Columbus hopes to start a new tradition for parishioners to publicly display this iconic symbol of our faith in our town.
Lift High the Cross is a new project where Knights members will construct and install a 5 foot tall wooden cross to be displayed in yards during Lent. For a $20 donation, Knights members will place a cross in your yard starting Saturday, March 9, the Saturday after Ash Wednesday. The crosses will be on display through Easter when Knights members will collect the crosses on Saturday, April 27, the Saturday after Easter.
“We think this is a great opportunity for evangelization and to show our faith to anyone driving by our yards,” explained Curtis Wolf, chair of the project.
When signing up for a cross, purchasers will be given a flag to place in their yard, marking where they would like the cross to be placed. Crosses will be mounted on a post driven into the ground. During this time, home owners are encouraged to decorate the crosses for Lent with lights, cloth, or other items. However, no paint will be allowed on the crosses as they will be reused in future years. Purple is a traditional color associated with Lent, symbolizing prayer, fasting, and repentance of the season.
An example of the cross will be displayed in the front lawn of the St. Joseph’s rectory.
All proceeds raised through this project will be donated to Knights of Columbus #1187 charities.
If you have questions about the project or would like to sign up for a cross, call or text Curtis Wolf at 785-623-3189.
